Built in 1921, the Health Services Building on the Old Victoria Hospital Lands is a notable example of Collegiate Neoclassical architecture, characteristic of early-20th-century institutional designs. Its distinctive “E” shape, featuring three wings, and rows of large grouped windows reflect the architectural vision of Watt & Blackwell.

Originally intended as the University of Western Ontario’s Medical School, the building served as a state-of-the-art facility for medical education and research. It housed an auditorium, a library, and specialized facilities for studying embryology, pathology, physiology, anatomy, and pharmacology. From 1921 to 1965, the medical school thrived here, contributing significantly to advancements such as insulin research, the artificial kidney machine, and the development of the “Cobalt bomb.”

As one of the three remaining buildings from the former Victoria Hospital campus, the Health Services Building plays a key role in preserving the historical narrative of medical services in the area. It received heritage designation in 2022, underscoring its significance.

Currently, the site is undergoing redevelopment by the SoHo Alliance, which will create 680 new homes. Indwell is rehabilitating both the War Memorial Children’s Hospital and the Health Services Building. The latter will include 96 supportive housing units across two programs, alongside common areas, staff offices, a rooftop terrace, and an auditorium that will serve the broader SoHo community by offering food security and other amenities.

Remediation work is complete, with construction anticipated to begin in 2025. The redevelopment will adhere to Passive House standards, featuring triple-glazed heritage replica windows and restoring the masonry façade and other historic elements.
