This Design-Build project restored a two-storey heritage council building to its earlier configuration, preserving and revitalizing a historically significant landmark. The completed renovation reinstated a double-height council chamber with a viewing mezzanine, creating a renewed gathering space for both council and community use. The original tall arched windows bring back the original character of the building. Significant upgrades to the building envelope improve thermal performance, while modernized mechanical systems enhance overall energy efficiency.
Originally opened in 1882, the building serves as an important place where matters concerning the interests of the First Nation—including discussions related to the Indian Act—are addressed. Many significant decisions impacting the lives of community members are made within its walls.
Located at the centre of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation’s territory, the Council House has long been a focal point for community life. For over a century, it has hosted council meetings, cultural events, and gatherings that embody the values and traditions of the Nation, fostering dialogue, leadership, and unity.
Following a period of closure, the restored Council House is now reopened and once again serves as a vital venue for council meetings, cultural events, and community gatherings.
