First Hamilton Christian Reformed Church Restoration

Location: Hamilton, ON

Client: First Hamilton Christian Reformed Church

Year of Completion: 2013

Construction Budget: $1,329,000

Architect of Record: Invizij Architects

Invizij designed the complete restoration of this 130-year-old place of worship in downtown Hamilton. The entire exterior of the building was revitalized, including masonry re-pointing and replacement, restoration of the leaded glass windows, roof replacement, new exterior doors, and required structural repairs.
The design for the interior renovations creates a more welcoming entry, visually connected various spaces, and improved communal worship space in the sanctuary. The chancel was restored to reflect heritage attributes of the original sanctuary, including the quatrefoil motif, along with a new barrier free stage for the worship team. The scope of work also included nursery upgrades, a new prayer room, kitchen upgrades, improvements to accessibility throughout the building, and site improvements. New mechanical systems improved energy efficiency, while adding air conditioning to the building. The project has resulted in a brighter, more comfortable, and adaptable facility for the church’s growing congregation.
