The redevelopment project was steered through complex approvals to replace outdated buildings, improve community services, and enhance acute care support at a complex site consisting of 13 buildings built ad hoc over several decades. The modernization involved 400,000 square feet of new construction and 25,000 square feet of renovations including: a state-of-the-art Emergency Department, eight new Operating Rooms, a consolidated Diagnostic Imaging Department, enhanced Oncology Inpatient Unit, and a custom-design Intensive Care Unit. Our innovative and practical thinking resulted in revisions to Juravinski’s Master Plan and ensured best patient care, operational flow, and cost efficiencies.
The design is based on health-promoting principles to provide a therapeutic and healing environment for patients and their families. The building features rounded architectural forms, colourful materials, ample natural light and ventilation, increased circulation and dramatic views of the surrounding Niagara Escarpment and Lake Ontario. A central hallway reconnects existing buildings to the street and links the hospital to the cancer centre, providing a new shared main entrance facing Concession Street. All entrances are distinct, with clear hierarchy of public spaces and circulation.
