Site visit yesterday to one of the @vicparkch sites that is being retrofitted and decarbonized. The Braeburn building at 1 Hamilton St. in Waterdown has a blanket of exterior insulation and BIPV solar panels by @mitrex_solar that is nearly complete on the 1960’s era apartment building. And a new colour palette.

The 100-unit building is installing 7,365 square feet of outside solar panels is calculated to translate into 50 megawatt hours. ☀️ ☀️ ☀️ The cladding is among a suite of upgrades, including heat pumps, triple-pane windows and energy-recovery ventilators. Similar retrofits are underway at their building at 831 Queenston in Stoney Creek.

Did you catch Teviah Moro`s recent article about Victoria Park Community Homes (VPCH) `going solar` in the Hamilton Spectator? The story highlights a pair of 1960s-era midrise blocks that are being refurbished with building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) panels.

Invizij has been thrilled to work with Victoria Park Community Homes on the BIPV layout and recladding colours for their 831 Queenston Rd. and 1 Hamilton buildings. Swipe to see where the solar panels will be integrated on the 1 Hamilton buildings (second image).

We are also excited about construction starting for the 107-unit building at 525 Stone Church Rd. E - one of our projects for VPCH that is aiming for BIPV on the railings and solar PV on the roof.

As Moro notes in his article, other affordable-housing providers in Hamilton, such as CityHousing Hamilton, are also leveraging federal funding to deliver greener buildings. We`re excited to share a little glimpse into yesterday`s airtightness training session for 204 Gage Supportive Housing, our project with Sacajawea Non-Profit Housing and Flourish Development Group --now under construction.

After carefully reviewing building science theory, air-sealing best practices, and construction details, we put our knowledge to the test by taping two test boxes with typical air barrier penetrations that might occur on the job site. We then pressurized the boxes and filled them with theatrical smoke to identify any leaks!

Building airtightness is important for an indoor environment. From improving air quality, to eliminating temperature fluctuations, to lowering energy bills--it is a key factor in occupant comfort and energy efficiency.

Big thanks to our @defaveriteam hosts, our instructors Tristan and Stephen from Building Enclosure Labs Inc. and all those who attended and asked great questions!
