We were at the City of Mississauga Urban Design Awards tonight. Each of the nominated projects were well presented on backlit displays throughout the large room of this historic building. Our Lakeshore Lofts project didn’t win this time, but it was great to hear about the new parks, public art, and other facilities that are making Ontario’s third largest city a better place to live and work.
@indwell.ca `s latest supportive housing project in St. Thomas, The Station, partnered with the municipality to build a single-bay firehall on the ground floor which is needed for future development on the west end of town. Designed to meet Passive House standards, this is the second affordable housing + fire hall that we are aware of in Canada, the first being fire station No. 5 which partnered with the YWCA in Vancouver.
The fire hall still needs to be fit out in the coming year, but the residential portion is already at almost full occupancy a month after opening. We are thankful for the talented photography of the site by Industryous Photography. #AffordableHousing #mixedusedevelopment #passivehouse #canadiandesign #firehall #urbaninfill
The much-needed women’s drop in centre, Carole Anne’s Place, at the downtown @ywcahamilton opened earlier this week.
Located in what was the large pool room and changing areas and accessed off Jackson St., this bright new space will support 25 women in the overnight stay and many more in the day program (it is open from 10pm-1pm each day). The highlight of the space is the phenomenal murals by local artist Kayla Whitney (follow her on Instagram at @koe.design).
It’s open to women and gender diverse people. There are wrap around services offered on site, like harm reduction, health services (nurses, and doctor at the clinic), & housing. YWCA Hamilton strengthens women’s and girls’ voices, broadens their choices, builds dynamic leadership, and provides essential and meaningful services that promote safe, inclusive, and equitable communities. We are so delighted to be able to work with the YW in their pursuit of creating a more equitable Hamilton for women and girls!
Take a tour of our newest supportive housing project for @indwell.ca in St. Thomas, Ontario. By partnering with the city and fire department, we were able to share the site and build #passivehouse affordable housing for a reasonable price. The staff are preparing gift boxes for the tenants who will start arriving in the next couple weeks. Your tour guide is Flora the springer spaniel. 🐾
Thanks to Hans from @siga_north_america for coming out to teach our team about air sealing around window openings. If only all new buildings made the effort to air seal with proper tapes and membranes, we would be able to reduce their energy consumption *significantly*. The Swiss 🇨🇭 have it right, a well air sealed building reduces energy consumption, improves comfort, and ensures that you won’t have moisture issues within the wall or roof assemblies which can be a huge problem. All it takes is good tape and the right membrane! #airtightness #siga #passivehouse
The Cannon at the corner of Ottawa and Cannon feels just right in its new home. The fact that the space is located in an affordable housing building is just what Hamilton needs in this time of housing crisis. Here is a sneak peak into the space. If you haven`t been yet, you really must try their savoury waffle sandwiches and delicious lattes. The renovations of the building were designed by Invizij, with interior design of the cafe by stré studio. #cafe #hamont #hamonteats #affordablehousing #passivehouse #renovation
